Michael Davidson

Michael Davidson has worked as an instrumental tutor and community musician for Hertfordshire Music Service since 1985, developing several innovative musical inclusion models that build inclusion capacity for instrumental music tutors.

Michael led the research element of Youth Music Fund C project MusicNet East 2015-18, which used the Hertfordshire models as catalysts for development in Essex, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk Music Services.

Supervised by Angela Impey at SOAS, his PhD ‘Growing Through Music’ is based on MNE 2015-18, and explores how diversifying instrumental teaching can develop alternative forms of musical citizenship in schools in England.

He now leads the Changing Tracks programme, which uses further action-based research as a catalyst for music services and tutors to adapt their practice to benefit from the inclusion of a wider range of pupils.
